Saint Bartholomew’s parish dates from 1770 when the Governor and Council met to name our county Chatham. In the days of rebellion and revolution the formation of the church was postponed. In 1821, religious interests and services were recorded by a group of people from the Lower Cape Fear who ‘summered’ here and became permanent residents. Among this group were the Hills who were concerned that a church be established. In 1831 a contract was signed by two Hill brothers to build a church. The cornerstone was laid in 1832 and St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church was consecrated in 1833 by Bishop Ives. The glowing stained glass windows and the churchyard speak to the history of this little church.
